Why Does The Caffeine (In Excedrin) Help Relieve The Pain Of My Migraines?

Excedrin is the only otc that masks the pain - is it the caffeine? and why does that help relieve the pain?

Answer

Hi mymymigraine,

Caffeine is added to drugs due for its potential to help it work faster and better. For some people, however, caffeine may trigger a Migraine attack.

An important note here - if we take certain OTC and/or prescription medications more than two to three days a week, we may be at an increased risk of Medication Overuse Headache (MOH.) Excedrin falls into this groups as does, ibuprofen, fioricet and others. For more information continue reading: Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires.

Another problem may be Transformed Migraine. This article confirms that some drugs can change our Migraine pattern. Read this article for more information: T****ransformed Migraine - Risk Increased by Some Medications.

Good luck
