Why Does Enbrel Cost So Much?

the cost of a drug is impacted by a number of different factors, including how long it's been around, whether generic versions are available and how much it costs to develop it. Enbrel and the other Biologics are a very new type of medication consisting of genetically engineered proteins derived from human genes. As I'm sure you can imagine, that's a complicated process. As well, Enbrel (the oldest biologic) has only been around since 1999 and as of yet, there isn't a generic version available. It will probably be available in the next few years, but will still be very expensive. I think of it this way: medication designed to solve really big problems, such as the Biologics, chemotherapy, and the like, tend to be more expensive because they are much more complicated and resource intensive to develop and produce.

As V mentioned, Enbrel does have a program to help people work trouble affording the medication. There are also a number of other financial assistance programs for medication that you may want to look into.

Good luck!
