Why Am I Still Getting Outbreaks While On Acyclovir?

When I am not on suppressive therapy I get outbreaks when I'm stressed or not following a strict regimen of diet and sleep. I have been back on acyclovir for several months and yesterday I got my 3rd outbreak in 7 months. I just don't get it. I take 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening.

I have also heard that there can be kidney damage with prolonged use. Is this true?

Hi Earth Girl,

Thank you for your question. I'm not sure what does of acyclovir you're taking, but the recommended dose for adults (>12 years old) for treatment of an outbreak is 200 mg five times a day for 10 days. For suppression, the recommended dose is 400 mg twice daily, or 200 mg 3-5 times per day. If you're having an outbreak, I would suggest contacting your doctor to see if you should be taking a higher dose. If the medication is not working for you, you should discuss other treatment options with your doctor.

Best of luck,
