Why Am I Having A Period Now After 7 Years With None?

Had been experiencing major pain (labia majoris) for almost a week, along with complete lack of appetite. Yesterday what seems like a period began, and the pain subsided and appetite returned. I'd been scheduled for a pelvic exam yesterday, but the doctor had to reschedule due to a delivery. What could be going on?

Answer

Hi Sara,

It is not rare for women to have a bleed even a long time after stopping periods. I have many patients who have experienced it and did myself after 13 years! Usually no cause is found, but it is definitely a situation that needs evaluation. I would assume your provider will do a vaginal ultrasound and biopsy. Often what is found is a thickened endometrium (lining of the uterus) and a D and C might be necessary to get it back to normal and not bleeding.

Good luck to you and keep in touch,
