Why Do Only Narcotics Improve My Migraines?

i have had severe migraines for 15 years, and it seems that only narcotics ease the pain. i have tried all the triptan medicines on the market thus far, and also some preventative medications with little to no effectiveness.

Triptans don't work for all Migraineurs. You said you've tried them all. I just want to be sure, because for some people, only one works. So you've tried all seven -- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Relpax, Axert, and Frova?

There are a few other abortive medications you can discuss with your doctor -- Midrin, Migranal Nasal Spray, and DHE-45.

How frequent are your Migraines? Anyone who has more than three Migraines a month needs to be taking something for prevention. There's growing evidence that Migraine is a progressive brain disease. A recent study showed that Migraines can cause brain damage, and that people with three or more Migraines a month are more susceptible to this damage. For more information, see Is Migraine a Progressive Brain Disease? and Yes, Migraines Can Cause Brain Damage.

There are now over 100 medications and supplements that can be used for Migraine and headache prevention. The frustration of trying to find what works for us can make it seem as if we've tried it all, but with so many possible preventives, it's literally impossible to have tried them all. See Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up! for more information.

Hope this helps,
