Why Is My Right Breast Suddenly Larger?

A week ago I started noticing my right breast growing larger...It is now about a cup size bigger then the left. It isn't really pain as much as it is an odd discomfort an some tenderness. I'm not worried about it being cancer as much as I just want to know what is going on. Im only 18 and its starting to worry me. This morning when I woke up there was a bruise along the top portion of my right breast. What could cause this?

A difference in breast size is not uncommon, and at eighteen, your breasts might still be growing, but at an uneven pace. You could be having swelling associated with your menstrual cycle or pregnancy that for some reason is affecting one breast more than another. The swelling is probably what is leading to the discomfort and tenderness. Swelling can also be a symptom of an infection or a rare type of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer.

Since this is a sudden change in your breasts, you will probably need to call a doctor to get it checked out. If it is near time for your period to start, you could wait to see what happens after your period. Many women have breast swelling and tenderness in the week or two before their periods, and it's not always even. If the swelling goes down, wait another month and see what happens. This may turn out to be part of your monthly cycle. If the swelling does not go down after your period, call the doctor. The cause is probably not dangerous, but you'll feel better once the doctor has checked it out.
