Will Side Effects Of Femara Stay In My System For 5 To 6 Yrs. After I Stop The Drug?

My oncologist said the drug will stay in my system for 5 to 6 years after I stop taking the Femara. I would like to know if the side effects (bone pain, hair loss) will also remain up to this length of time?

Answer

Ruth, I think the doctor means research shows you may experience Femara's ability to lower your risk of breast cancer recurrence; I don't believe the actual drug remains in your system for longer than a month or so after you stop taking it. Whether the lowered risk of recurrence is due to Femara reducing your circulating estrogen, I'm not sure... My experience, after finishing Arimidex (a similar drug), is that the bone/joint pain stopped; but my hair didn't fully return to its former thickness. I think you'll definitely feel different within 6 months to a year after you stop taking it; but whether you feel like you did before, and whether your hair comes back 100% -; well, everyone is different, and we all have our own experiences. Good luck - I hope at some point you see some improvement. PJH
