A 21 Year Old Woman Has Had Pain In Her Right Breast For A Little Over A Year Now.

It goes on and off, it's a weekly consistency of pain. It started off with just discomfort but each time the pain comes back, it comes back stronger. Just yesterday she made a self exam and she noticed a lump near her underarm. She has low immunity - gets sick easily. She will be going to the doctor soon. It can't be cancer because of the pain when she said she pressed on the lump. Her greatest concern is just that the pain wont go away. More than likely, it's a lymph node right? I just want reassurance on the situation. Thank you!

Answer

Dear Elvia, as PJ says, this is not likely to be breast cancer, especially since the pain comes and goes. Is the pain related to her menstrual cycle? That would be very typical and not likely to be dangerous. While pain is not usually a breast cancer symptom, it is a myth that lumps that hurt cannot be breast cancer. Just for future reference, it is important to know that any breast change, including pain, that lasts longer than a month needs to be checked out by a doctor.
