Zika Halts FL Blood Collection

The demand for blood always goes up in the summer, but some donors in southern Florida are being asked to hold off on giving for now.

The Food and Drug Administration asked blood banks in Broward and Miami-Dade counties to stop collecting blood until they can implement a test for the Zika virus. The temporary halt isn’t expected to cause problems, as a test may be available as soon as this week.

Health officials in Florida are dealing with the first suspected outbreak of Zika in the U.S. At least four cases have been identified in those two counties since July 19. State and federal health inspectors are working with residents and trapping mosquitos in the region.

Zika, spread by mosquitos, is linked to birth defects.
