Can Zomig Be Used Daily Without Getting Rebound Headaches?

How long has Zomig been approved and what are the adverse side effects? Also, I'm thinking of taking it daily and would like to know if Zomig can cause rebound headaches.

Answer

Elaine,

Regular Zomig tablets were approved in 1997, Zomig ZMT (melt tabs) in 2001, and the nasal spray in 2003. For a list of the potential side effects of Zomig, see our Zomig profile. Yes, Zomig does have the potential to cause medication overuse headaches (MOH), aka rebound. Triptans shouldn't be taken more than two or three days a week to avoid MOH. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires.

It sounds as if talking with your doctor about Migraine prevention is in order.
