Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones weaken and become brittle. In later stages of osteoporosis, bones may reach the point of breaking. Age, weight, and hormone levels play a role as risk factors in predicting whether you may develop this disease, as does gender (osteoporosis is more common in women). You can use this calculator to input your information, then receive a score that reveals your risk of getting osteoporosis.
Calculate My Osteoporosis Risk
What Does My Osteoporosis Risk Score Mean?
If your Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument (ORAI) score is between 0 and 8 points, you are considered at lower risk for developing the disease. If your ORAI score is between 9 and 26, you are at higher risk for osteoporosis and might want to talk with your doctor about receiving bone densitometry testing, which measures the density of your bones.
Older age, lower body weight, and low estrogen levels can all contribute to osteoporosis risk.
It’s important to note that this calculator measures only a few of the many variables that come together in determining who does or doesn’t develop this condition. For instance, older adults who engage in weight-bearing exercise are less likely to develop osteoporosis than those who remain sedentary. Share these results with your doctor who will review them along with other aspects of your health history to determine the best path forward.
