Low-Salt Cooking Club
Move over, salty packaged foods! Our dietitian-crafted recipes are so packed with flavor you won’t miss the sodium, and your blood pressure will thank you.
If you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension), your doctor has probably told you to cut way back on the amount of salt you’re eating. And that can be tough—loads of sodium can hide in everything from canned soups to bottled salad dressings. HealthCentral’s Low-Salt Cooking Club is here to help by supplying you with 15 recipes that go easy on sodium without ditching flavor.
Why trim out salt when it tastes so good? Along with the risk of stroke that comes from sky-high blood pressure, there are a couple of other reasons. One: It’s well-known that sodium increases the risk of cardiovascular disease—a review looked at 36 studies (and a total of 616,905 participants) and found that compared with individuals who had low sodium intake, individuals with high sodium intake had a higher adjusted risk of cardiovascular disease. Plus, research published in 2022 suggests that high sodium intake is related to higher non-alcoholic fatty liver disease risk, which can lead to scarring, cirrhosis, and even failure of your liver. Yikes! It makes sense that we’d all want to clear out some of the ever-present salt in our diets to improve our long-term health.
All recipes from this collection have a “low sodium” stamp of approval from our registered dietitian who created them with getting a handle on high blood pressure in mind. So go ahead—enjoy these delicious eats for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack time!
