Keep your hair clean

When you are sweating, you might find it necessary to wash your hair more often. Some people only use shampoo every other day or every few days during the winter months, but find they need to wash their hair daily during the summer. Shampoo, however, gets rid of your natural oils so be sure to use a conditioner after shampooing.


Use only a minimal amount of shampoo

If your ends are dry, use shampoo on the scalp only. The suds from the shampoo will drip to the rest of your hair without having to apply shampoo directly. If you have thin hair, look for clear shampoos; creamy shampoos add extra weight and can make your hair look flat.


Don’t skip the conditioner

If you have greasy hair, you might be tempted to skip the conditioner. Instead, wash your hair as normal and apply conditioner to the ends to keep these from splitting and breaking.


Don’t wash your hair before swimming

If you plan to go swimming, hold off shampooing your hair until after. Washing your hair removes the natural protection and makes it more vulnerable to drying. After swimming, shampoo and condition your hair.


Brush your hair better

Brushing your hair helps stimulate hair growth. Remember the general rule of thumb is the longer your hair, the bigger the brush. When brushing, don’t pull through the knots as this will break your hair. Instead, spray some detangler and use a wide tooth comb for the knots.


Get a trim

Get a trim before summer starts. The hot sun, chlorine and salt can dry your hair. Trimming the ends will help them stay healthy.


Use summer styles

Styles such as braids or ponytails, give your hair a break from the hair dryer. Avoid pulling wet hair into a ponytail as this can cause breakage. Wait until your hair dries to pull it back.


Stay away from alcohol based styling products

Things like hair spray dry out your hair. If you do use hair spray, spray a small amount onto a small brush (such as an eyebrow brush) and use that to target areas rather than spraying on your entire head.


Tame frizz

Use a dehumidifier in your house to help reduce the frizz. Air conditioners help remove moisture from the air. Keep a few dryer sheets with you. Rubbing them across your hair will help cut down frizz.


Treat your hair before swimming

Before going in a pool or the ocean, apply oil, such as sunflower oil, to your hair and then wet your hair. This reduces the amount of chlorine or salt your hair absorbs.
