Certain products or supplies purchased to help with incontinence may be tax-deductible or qualify you for reimbursement, according to health experts and guidelines from the Internal Revenue Service. If you have incontinence, here’s what to do to find out your options.
Talk to your doctor
If you have incontinence symptoms, your doctor can provide an official diagnosis. Some products or conditions may be harder to have insurance cover than others. So ask for a letter from your doctor explaining your prescribed need for incontinence supplies, one that you can take to a tax adviser. Doctors can suggest reimbursement options based on your health and financial means.
Take a look at your health insurance
Most private insurance plans don’t cover incontinence, but you may be able to be reimbursed through a health savings (HSA) or flex spending account (FSA) at your job. An HSA allows you to budget a certain amount of income to cover healthcare costs, isn’t federally taxed, and can build up over time. With an FSA, the amount chosen is used within the year. As you pay for health supplies, receipts must be sent to your employer for reimbursement.

Medicare covers hospital medical and prescription costs for those 65 years or older. Certain disabilities or diseases may also qualify those under 65. Medicaid helps partially or fully cover medical bills by sending payment directly to the provider. Eligibility is based on age, limited income status, or disability and can be checked here.

Search through city or government listings to find local health offices, offices for the aging, senior centers and disability centers. These places can help direct you to find the best options for reimbursement. They can also direct you to centers such as clinics or diaper banks that may provide incontinence products at little to no cost.
