As you enter menopause, you'll want someone who is willing to be a partner in your health care, not the captain of the ship. You'll want a doctor who will be a willing partner of your health care team, who knows the medical literature and best practices, but who also is open to new approaches based on a holistic view of medicine. Here are five questions to ask yourself to determine if your doctor is still right for you

What is your doctor’s attitude toward aging?

Make sure you and your doctor are on the same page about the aging process. Don't be afraid to ask questions or challenge your doctor if you don't feel comfortable with something. Most of all, be sure you are being treated with the utmost care.

What is the general age demographic of your doctor's patients?

Nothing against younger people, but you'll want a doctor that is up on the issues that you may face as you are aging.

Does your doctor practice what he/she preaches in relation to health care?

There's no better reference or review of a doctor than the doctor herself. You'll want a doctor that appears to take care of herself the same way she is prescribing her patients.

Does your doctor take the time to answer your questions?

It's very important that your doctor does not rush you through office visits, but rather takes the time to answer your questions and help you become informed about your health.

Are you still using a gynecologist as your primary doctor?

If so, you may want to also consult an internist who can help you learn how to be proactive in protecting your health.
