If you are living with an anxiety disorder, you aren’t alone. About 40 million adults in the United States have an anxiety disorder according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). Everyone feels nervous or anxious from time to time, but when you have an anxiety disorder, it can be debilitating. You might limit what you do and where you go to help ease your symptoms. But anxiety is a treatable medical condition. You don’t have to feel alone and isolated.

Talk to your family doctor

You may think your family doctor is available only for physical illnesses, but you can also reach out for emotional difficulties. If your anxiety is interfering with your life or stopping you from doing the things you love, make an appointment to talk with your family doctor.


Call your insurance company for list of doctors in your network

Anxiety disorders are often treated by mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists or psychologists. If you aren’t sure how to go about finding a mental health professional, call your health insurance company and ask for the names of providers in your area that are covered under your plan.


Employee assistance programs

Some employers have employee assistance programs (EAPs), which work with individual employees to find the resources and professional help to deal with a variety of personal, family, and work issues, including mental health. Many of the services they offer may be free to employees or available for a nominal cost. Talk to the Human Resources Department at your place of employment to find out if they offer an EAP.

There are a variety of resources available to service members and veterans who are living with anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Contact the resources below to find out how they can help.

Anxiety resources for students

For students in grade school or high school, your guidance counselor can be a good resource. If you are in college, make an appointment at the on-campus counseling center.


Mental Health America

Mental Health America is a non-profit organization that has affiliate programs throughout the United States. Search for an affiliate organization near you and contact them for additional resources in your area. They can help you locate a mental health provider, as well as local support groups.


The Anxiety and Depression Association of America

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) has numerous resources to help. You can search for a member therapist, find a support group, and look up self-help publications.


Free clinics and community mental health centers

If you don’t have insurance, there are many free clinics and community mental health centers that offer free or low-cost health care around the United States. You can search for one near you:
