Living with a chronic disease that usually presents itself as red, flaky patches on your skin can make choosing your wardrobe a little daunting. But if you take a moment to understand what psoriasis is, then you’ll have the confidence to rock today’s fashion trends. I’ve rounded up the top summer trends to make you take pride in your psoriasis.

Pantone colors

We’re going old school here: red, yellow, green, blue — they’re all fair game. These primary colors were a standout at most of the major fashion shows during fashion week. Try this twist-front top or this off-the-shoulder blouse if you want the summer feel but want to stay a little more covered up. When you’re donning these bright colors, you won't be thinking about anything else.

Check print

This cheeky print isn’t just for winter anymore. Choose from a variety of patterns like subtle plaid, gingham, or bright and beautiful. There’s no lack in different styles either. Whether you are dressing for a day in an air-conditioned office in a long blazer and a maxi dress, or keeping cool outside in shorts and a tee, you’ll be craving these checkered prints when the summer heats up.

Beach clothes

You had me at beach! Think classic Betty Draper or the modern Lilly Pulitzer. A day in the soleil doesn’t mean you have to bare it all. This trend (with breathable fabric!) will have you wanting to step out of the house with a Lilly Pulitzer swing dress, ruffle romper, or this tunic that can be worn multiple ways. Throw on these adorable oversized round sunglasses and your look is complete.

Floral dresses

I’ve talked about my love of floral dresses and surviving the summer heat while living with psoriasis here. Anything floral just puts a smile on my face, even when it’s 100 degrees outside. If it’s cooler where you live, pair it with a cardigan or denim jacket and your ensemble is complete. This neon floral dress and white floral maxi dress are some options that will definitely make you take pride in your psoriasis.

Fringe

There’s no escaping the swishing of this trend: fringe, fringe, and more fringe. From a cute fringe tee to a cocktail dress, fringe has got you covered from head to toe. Fun accessories like this fringe bag or these statement fringe earrings will have you talking about where you got these gorgeous fringe finds and not so much about your flare-ups.

Suit shorts

If you need to keep it a little professional (I guess we have to work sometime, right?) then suit shorts are for you. Paired with a light cardigan, those summer nights are calling your name. How adorable is this suit-short look from Lauren Conrad? The blazer is perfect to pair with jeans and flats for more coverage in the board room, and transitions easily to the beach with your favorite slides and a tank.

Puff sleeves

No, we’re not talking the Jerry Seinfeld puff sleeves. Think more along the lines of Princess Diana. Puffballs and power sleeves were all over the Saint Laurent Paris Fashion Week show. When your flare-ups happen in unexpected or new places, step out of your comfort zone this summer and rock the puff sleeves trends with looks like a puff-shoulder blouse or puff-sleeve tee.

Pretty in pastel

There’s nothing like a pretty pastel crochet top or this blush rose dress to put you in the mood for your next summer soiree. Choose from dresses, shorts, tanks or tees. Whichever way you go, you’re bound to impress.

Trench coats

Whether it’s to throw on over your floral dress or keep on hand for cool nights, a trench coat will be your friend this summer. Try this satin trench or this lightweight linen trench coat  for your next summer outing. You can also check out the best trench coats to get you started.

Athleisure Wear

Some days are just for dressing down. Am I right? Then you’ll love the athleisure wear trend. Without looking too circa 1980’s, pair a track jacket over your swimsuit with a cute denim skirt. Or the track pants with a classic tank or off-the-shoulder tee. When you reach for atheisure wear, just make sure to stick with breatheable fabric like viscose or cotton.

Bum bags or belt bags

This is not your 80’s fanny pack. Think of it as the fanny packs older, sophisticated sister. You can choose from the sporty bum bag, the dressy belt bag, or ultra-chic belt bag. I love this trend because you don’t have to think about what bag is going to match your outfit. Stick with a neutral color and you’ll have more time to spend sipping on a cocktail. Plus, it’s perfect to keep your travel size lotion with you at all times!
