My Thyroid Stimulati: Meet the Members of My Thyroid Support Team
Mary Shomon | Nov 17, 2017
In his groundbreaking book, The Stimulati Experience: 9 Skills for Getting Past Pain, Setbacks, and Trauma to Ignite Health and Happiness, author Jim Curtis coins the term “stimulati” to describe the transformative people, places, experiences, and research that helped him in his two decade-long journey to health and happiness despite a chronic illness. I loved the book, and the concept of stimulati resonated deeply. As a result, I would like to share with you my own life-changing stimulati.
Editor’s note: Curtis is president of Remedy Health Media, the parent company of HealthCentral.com.
Teri Cochrane, is a Reston, Virginia-based holistic and integrative nutritional advisor, and Certified Coach Practitioner. Teri is a tireless researcher who is dedicated to solving nutritional and genomic puzzles to bypass disease processes. I’m someone who has carried around viruses — including chronically elevated Epstein-Barr titers. Just a few months on Teri’s protocol of supplements and simple dietary changes and my titers disappeared, inflammation was reduced, and I felt amazingly energetic.
Demo DiMartile is a talented healer and creator of a series of guided meditations, including my favorite, the Thyroid Meditation. Demo has helped me understand that a key goal is to get the mind and the body speaking the same language and communicating with each other. Meditation is one way to effectively bridge that communication gap. Demo’s healing voice and the power of his affirming guided meditations are truly transformative.
Richard Shames, M.D. and Karilee Shames, R.N., Ph.D.
My stimulati list would not be complete without Rich and Karilee Shames. Richard Shames, M.D. is an integrative physician and Dr. Karilee Shames is an R.N. and hormonal health advocate. Together they wrote some of my favorite books, including “ThyroidPower", “Thyroid MindPower", and “Feeling Fat, Fuzzy or Frazzled?”. The Shames have always been on the forefront of cutting-edge hormonal care, and have never hesitated to speak out on behalf of better diagnosis and treatment for patients.
Kent Holtorf, M.D.
Integrative physician Kent Holtorf, M.D. is the founder of the Holtorf Medical Group network of integrative medical practices, with locations around the United States. After a traditional medical education, Dr. Holtorf turned to integrative approaches to help resolve his own health challenges and never looked back. He is one of the most innovative practitioners looking at the role of gut health in immune function and metabolism, and is a research-driven pioneer for better thyroid care.
David Borenstein, M.D.
David Borenstein, M.D. is a New York City-based integrative physician and founder of Manhattan Integrative Medicine. Dr. Borenstein has joined me for numerous programs in New York, teaching hundreds of patients how to get properly diagnosed and treated for hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, and effective ways to manage metabolism. Dr. Borenstein is also on the forefront of work with approaches such as autologous stem cells, low dose naltrexone, and pain management.
Teresa Tapp is an exercise physiologist and creator of my favorite workout/movement program, T-Tapp. Teresa has figured out how to maximize muscle activation and achieve results in the least amount of time, without exhaustion or injury. Throw in the added benefits of detox, and to me, it’s the perfect exercise program for thyroid patients! I’m always inspired when Teresa says her trademark line: “Yes, you CAN!”
Kevin Passero, N.D.
I call naturopathic physician Dr. Kevin Passero the Sherlock Holmes of medicine, because Dr. Passero always wants to know the root cause of illness. He’s not satisfied to hand out prescriptions; he wants to get to the root of the symptoms and resolve things at a core level … to truly heal. Dr. Passero is a compassionate and committed physician who is extremely knowledgeable about how to work with hormones, immune system, gut, and brain chemistry for optimal health.
Lauren Chelec Cafritz
“Just breathe … ” It sounds simple, but in the hands of breathwork guru Lauren Chelec Cafritz, it’s life-changing, joy-filled advice. Lauren teaches classes and workshops on a variety of breathwork methods, including Transformational Breathwork and Integrative Breathing. For me, the breathwork approaches I’ve learned from Lauren are my way to fast-forward to energy, peace, calm, and better health.
Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D.
Sometimes it seems as if the doctors who’ve been through the fires themselves have the greatest compassion and best ideas. Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum had to drop out of med school due to chronic fatigue syndrome, but was able to go back, get his medical degree, and dedicate his career to helping others with fatigue, pain, and hormonal issues. His book From Fatigued to Fantastic is a must-read, and he’s an endless source of innovative ideas for thyroid, hormone, gut, and immune system health.
Marc David, M.A. is the Founder and primary teacher of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. He is also author of my absolute favorite “diet” book of all time, “The Slow Down Diet.” Marc doesn’t hand out food lists, recipes, or calorie counts. He’s teaching us how to work with the breath, mind, and body, to transform the way we eat, store, and use food. Marc is why every time I sit down to eat, I take three deep belly breaths. After you read his book, you will too!
Viana Muller is an anthropologist, natural health advocate, and co-founder of Whole World Botanicals, a company that brings organic, wildcrafted botanicals from the Peruvian Amazon and Andes to the U.S. market. Viana singlehandedly launched the introduction of maca to the American market, and is a tireless, socially-conscious advocate for the benefits of a range of powerful and natural Peruvian botanicals. Her Royal Maca was a key resource for me in a hot flash-free, easy menopause!

Kate Lemmerman, M.D.
Kate Lemmerman, M.D. is a Mclean, Virginia-based integrative physician, and founder of the Well Being-Being Well practice. She has also been my doctor for two decades! Dr. Kate has always been curious and open to learning and exploring more, while at the same time being a loving, patient-focused doctor.
