Limit time in the shower

Cut back on the time spent in the shower and bath during the winter. While a long, hot shower can be relaxing, it takes a toll on your skin. Soaking in the tub and steamy showers dries out the skin. Take short showers with warm water.


Put lotion on right after your shower when your skin is still damp. This will help retain moisture in your skin. Experts say to use an oil based moisturizer because the body produces less oil in the winter. If you have acne, consult with your dermatologist first about the best moisturizer for your skin type.

Wear sunscreen

Just because it's winter, don't skip on sun screen. The sun's rays are even more potent when they reflect off of white snow. Make sure you use sun block even during the winter. Stick to SPF protection of at least 30.

Exfoliate your skin

Exfoliate your skin at least twice a week. This will help prevent the buildup of dry, flakey skin. Use a scrub to get rid of dead skin on your face. In the shower, use a loofah or brush for your body. Buy a pumice stone to exfoliate your feet and give yourself a pedicure afterwards. Consult your dermatologist to see which method is best for your skin.

Pay attention to your skin

Keep an eye for any changes to your skin. Skin may become more irritated and dry in the winter. Elbows and knees are known trouble spots. Exfoliate and moisturize so that skin stays soft and supple.

Take care of your hands

Wear gloves to protect your hands from wind and cold. Some people find wool gloves to be itchy. If that's the case, try cotton or leather gloves that won't irritate your skin. Make sure to slather on a good moisturizer to keep your hands from cracking in the dry air.

Prevent chapped lips

Lips are particularly sensitive to dry air. Use a SPF lip balm to protect against chapped lips and sun damage. Carry lip balm with you everywhere. To keep your lips smoothe and kissable exfoliate them. Every two weeks gently rub your lips with a clean tooth brush to keep skin smoothe. Immediately apply a soothing lip balm afterwards.


A humidifier adds moisture into the air. With the windows closed and the heat turned up, the air inside your home is most likely very dry. Purchasing a humidifier is a solid investment. A humidifier can help decrease the symptoms of eczema. You may need more than one to see the benefits. Be sure to properly clean your humidifier to avoid the growth of mold and bacteria. You should change the humidifier water daily and clean the machine every three days.

Take off wet clothes

Never stay in wet clothes for long. When going out in the snow, be sure to dress in layers to keep warm and dry. If your skin is getting wet, then try to go inside and put on dry clothes. Wearing wet clothes can lead to chapped skin and may cause an eczema flare up.

Be careful with acne treatment or harsh creams

Try to decrease the use of harsh topical skin ointments and creams. Acne medication is known to dry out skin. In the winter when it's prone to dryness, your skin may not be able to handle these types of products. Consult your dermatologist when topical medication is drying out your skin too much.
