Top Natural Lotions and Creams to Help With Psoriasis

by Sabrina Skiles Patient Advocate

Finding the right natural lotion or cream to help with psoriasis can be daunting. What is the difference between natural and organic? Why do natural and organic ingredients really work? Should I have only one or stick with the same skincare line from the same company? (My advice is to mix it up from time to time). To make it less daunting for you, here is my list of the top natural and organic lotions to help with psoriasis.

Various natural ingredients.

Natural vs. organic

Before we get started, here’s a quick definition of the difference between natural and organic. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines natural as: “existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind.” Organic is defined as: “relating to or derived from living matter.” Lotions labeled with these terms tend to also contain vitamins (like vitamin E) and minerals, which help nourish skin — a number-one priority for people with psoriasis — and they usually lack harsh chemicals. In contrast, chemical-based lotions may have a lower price point, but many contain synthetic oils and other ingredients that can exacerbate your skin’s dryness.

Jojoba oil.

PurO3 ozonated oils

Have you ever thought of trying ozonated oils? Well, now’s the time and you should start with PurO3 Ozonated Oils. “Designed with purity and chemical sensitivity in mind, our products are made with organic premium grade oils and pure oxygen. That’s it.” If you’re new to ozonated oils I would try their Beauty Set complete with three of their most popular oils: jojoba, jojoba with lavender and coconut.

Lotion with salt and flowers.

Be Well Tea Tree Salve

If there’s one product you want to keep with you at all times to help with anything from your psoriasis flares to insect bites, it’s the Be Well Tea Tree Salve. The salve is toxin-free, organic, and made from nature-derived ingredients. It is also free from parabens, preservatives, chemicals, alcohol, and cruelty.

Mia and Dom skincare line

There are two products you’ll want to keep in your purse or on your bathroom counter as a mainstay: Soothing Skin Serum and Soothing Skin Salve. The combination of tamanu and safflower oil in both the salve and serum “encourages wound healing and promotes healthy skin while the rosehip seed oil acts as a skin healer.”

Coconut oil.

100% Pure

Now 100% Pure is a company I can get behind. They have several products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin and are free of harsh chemicals and toxins. The organic coconut and olive in the Blood Orange Cleansing Balm melts into the skin to help with impurities and leave your skin feeling silky smooth.

Buckaroo Organics

I have to say that I love the Buckaroo Organics Body Butter and Tough as Nails Organic Skin Treatment. The body butter is so light and airy and leaves your skin feeling smooth. It can also soothe a sunburn, dry cracks, and skin irritations. Also, if you have parts where your flare-ups are extremely flaky, the Tough as Nails Skin Treatment is perfect. I have used this on my knees and have seen the flakiness and redness diminish. Bonus: Because of its natural, plant-based ingredients, it replaces any antibacterial, anti-infection, healing ointment that you may have in your medicine cabinet.

Ann Marie

All of Ann Marie’s products go through an infusion process: selected natural herbs are infused into aloe vera and into skin-nutritive oils for up to 30 days at low heat (never over 95 degrees). Then additional, selected natural plant extracts, high antioxidants plant and seed oils are added to make “the most active and effective natural products.” Start with the Rosemary Peppermint Body Wash and Radiant Skin Silk Body Lotion.

Hand moisturizer.

MetaDerm Health System

If you’re looking for a natural, botanical skincare line then the MetaDerm is for you. It is a “powerful, moisturizing, anti-inflammatory therapy proven to dramatically restore skin health.” The best part is that it’s natural, steroid-free, hypo-allergenic, and safe to use every day.

Estelle Thild

This natural and organic skincare company is based in Sweden and is organically certified by EcoCert Greenlife. Their BioCalm line is just what you need in your life with the active key ingredient being oat extract. Oat is anti-inflammatory and has “been shown to reduce redness and skin irritation by more than 50 percent,” according to the company’s website. Their Magic Duo is perfect for those who just need a little something extra for their face and hairline.

Kelapa Organics

Kalapa Organics products are “100-percent natural (plant based) and are made with organic ingredients certified by ‘Australian Certified Organic,’” according to their website. Because I have severe scalp psoriasis, shampoo is a huge deal for me. The Kelapa products include a great shampoo and conditioner that will be in my rotation.
